A close reading of the score of The Queen of Spades not only restores a forgotten work, but also reveals an approach to film music strikingly different from his later, well-known film scores such as Alexander Nevsky (1938) and Ivan the Terrible (part 1, 1942–44, part 2, 1945). It’s a pretty cool way to still get the heart in a love tattoo but in a unique way.
